5 Maintenance Tips for Your Hot Water System
Category: Save Water
Your hot water system is crucial for the health and comfort of you and your family, so what can you do to make sure that it is running properly and to reduce the chances of it failing unexpectedly?
We’re sharing with you our top 5 Hot Water System maintenance tips today so you can show your system a bit of love so it not only works more efficiently, but also prolongs its life.
Tip #1: Regularly inspect your system for cracks or wearing
Pick a date in the month (the 1st is good) and each and every month go and check your hot water system over from top to bottom. Look for cracks, wearing or water leakage. It only takes 5 minutes, but it can save you from wasting costly water and lets you deal with small problems before they get worse.
Tip #2: Turn your tank system off if you’re going to be away for a while
If you’re only going to be gone for a week or so, don’t worry about this tip, but if you’re leaving for a few weeks or longer, turn your talk hot water system off. Why? Because otherwise your system will continue to heat your water, even though you aren’t using it - this extends the life of your system as well as saves you in gas or electricity.
Tip #3: Inspect the relief valve
You’ll need the manual that came with your tank (or Google your system and find it online if you don’t have it handy) in order to do this correctly. The relief valve is designed to relieve excess pressure so it’s vital that it is working properly. Make checking this a 6 monthly job.
Tip #4: Be careful with gardening work around your system
If your system is located on a grass area next to your home, be careful when you're doing garden maintenance. A whipper snipper for example can do a lot of damage to the pipes feeding your system and heavy bumps from the mower can cause cracks or dents. Just take care when you’re working in the area.
Tip #5: Get yearly professional services
Don’t wait until there is a problem, which could end up being really costly - organise with your local plumber to have your system serviced once per year. A professional will be able to pinpoint any potential issues before they get to be serious problems and will make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible. Every 5 years it is also a good idea to replace the sacrificial anode as this can corrode and cause issues with your hot water cylinder. Speak to your Laser Plumbing representative about this if you haven’t had it replaced in the last 5 years.
